Dept of Health Questions Whether Operator Seeking to Redevelop Hospital Site Misled Bankruptcy Court

The New Jersey Dept. of Health is speaking out regarding ongoing threats to close Heights University Hospital by its current operator, Hudson Regional Health (HRH), albeit behind the scenes. In a recent letter to attorneys for HRH, a lawyer representing the Dept. of Health reminded the hospital owner of statements made to a bankruptcy court earlier this year, which now seem to be at odds with demands from HRH that it get millions in emergency state aid.

For the past month, HRH has threatened service cutbacks and layoffs at Heights University Hospital if it does not receive significant financial support from the state. Yesterday it was publicly revealed that HRH has tentative plans to redevelop the hospital site into residential housing and move medical services elsewhere if significant state resources are not forthcoming. No such plans were outlined, however, when HRH acquired the hospital through bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year.
